Working With People With Disabilities

People with disabilities, like other minority groups, are actively seeking full civil rights. They want to be accepted as equals in their communities. How individuals with disabling conditions are portrayed can greatly affect the public’s perception of their worth. What you write and say can enhance the dignity of people with disabilities. Your communication should promote positive attitudes rather than emphasizing the disabling condition.

You can create large print by reproducing documents on the computer or a copy machine. The legal requirement is size 14 font. However, the preferred font size is 16. Contrast is very important. It is best to stick to black/white contrast. Colored paper makes it more difficult to read. Independent Living Resources can also handle large print needs.
