Independent living is the keystone to inclusion in society.
We can help guide you through the first steps towards independence and personal freedom. Our program is designed to teach blind and visually impaired people to adjust, function, and live as independently as possible within their community. Services are provided by qualified rehabilitation teachers who work with clients in their own homes and communities.
Our training focuses on many important activities for daily living, including:
Activities of Daily Living
Simple and effective methods for performing everyday tasks, such as; preparing meals, shopping, identifying clothing and money, and telling time.
Counseling
Individual, group, and family counseling to help deal with vision loss and to help build self-confidence.
How to Increase Use of Functional Vision
Maximizing remaining vision with the help of optical aids, proper lighting, and techniques for recognizing objects by their shape and color.
Learning Written Communication
Alternative methods of reading and writing such as large print, Braille and tape recorders. Instruction in handwriting, typing, and use of specialized technology such as talking computers and Braille embossers.
Orientation & Mobility
Getting around safely using a cane, a guide dog, or other methods.
Personal Management
Organizing finances, dealing with incoming mail, and participating in leisure activities.
We have special activities focused on seniors (aged 55+), and help 600-700 Oregonians per year to live fuller lives with varying degrees of vision loss, from being unable to read regular newsprint to more severe issues. We also offer seniors the chance to participate in an intensive one-week retreat so that they are able to live more independently.
