Governor Kulongoski Proclaimed February "Heart Healthy Awareness Month" in Oregon
Brand Oregon Partners with Providence Heart and Vascular Institute to Support Heart Health Awareness Activities
Portland, OR—In recognition of the abundance of heart healthy food grown and produced in Oregon, and the active lifestyle that the state provides, Governor Theodore R. Kulongoski proclaimed February as "Heart Healthy Awareness Month" in Oregon.

The proclamation, which emphasizes resources for the prevention of heart disease, specifically recognizes Brand Oregon for its role in heart health education and awareness.

"When people talk about Oregon, many refer to the great quality of life we have here," said Debby Kennedy, director of Brand Oregon. "There is no better way to enjoy a high-quality life than through good heart health. Our state provides us with everything we need to make the right choices, from fresh locally-grown food to an abundance of outdoor activities."

Governor Kulongoski's proclamation is concurrent with "American Heart Month." Since 1963 Congress has required the president to proclaim February as American Heart Month. The American Heart Association works with the administration to draft and sign this annual proclamation.

The Oregon Guide to Heart-Healthy Living: Brand Oregon has teamed up with Providence Heart and Vascular Institute to create this free booklet, which serves as a prevention/education tool to maintain an optimal, heart healthy lifestyle. It contains helpful information and resources including the latest guidelines on nutrition, risk factors and exercise; recipes and menus; information about healthy Oregon food choices; and links to Web-based resources. This guide, which is available at nearly 200 major retailers in Oregon and southwest Washington, can also be obtained by contacting the Providence Heart and Vascular Institute at 503-216-2088 and the Providence Resource Line at 503-574-6595 or 1-800-562-8964.
