Job Description
Tool and die makers analyze specifications and the layout of metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies. They use cutting tools, gauges, and machinists´ hand tools and apply knowledge of tool and die design and construction, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, machining and assembly procedures. They study specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models or descriptions, and determine the materials and machines required to fabricate parts. Tool and die makers compute dimensions, plan layouts, and determine assembly methods and sequence of operations. They set up and operate a variety of machine tools such as shapers, vertical turret lathes and engine lathes.
Working Conditions
Work is usually performed indoors in a shop atmosphere around a variety of equipment. Tool and die makers work around resins, adhesives and fiber particles.
Wages
Beginning apprentices start at about 50 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase usually every six months until the journey-level rate is achieved.
Length of Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship lasts four years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 144 hours per year of related training and a total of 8,000 hours on-the-job training.
Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 18 years of age. In additions, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent.
Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
Some apprenticeship committees under this program have statewide jurisdiction; however, opportunities may be limited in different geographical locations. Local apprenticeship committees may have opportunities available only to current employees.
