PRODUCTION SHEET METAL WORKER

Job Description
Industrial sheet metal workers set up and operate shears, hydraulic presses and brakes, hand brakes, punch presses and other equipment in order to cut, form and attach metal together.

 

Working Conditions
The work is performed indoors and may be in awkward positions or in cramped spaces. This work requires the ability to use math, precision and good hand-eye coordination.

 

Wages
Beginning apprentices start at about 70 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase, usually every six months, until the journey-level rate is achieved.

 

Length of Apprenticeship
This apprenticeship lasts about four years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 144 related classroom hours per year and 8,000 on-the-job training hours.

 

Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.

 
This program is only open to employees of training agents registered with the local apprenticeship committee.
