Job Description
Roll turners set up and operate different kinds of lathes, including CNC, tracer and block lathes. They also handle tool grinding deformation generators, HNF-CNC, EDM brandings, HS-2 roll grinders, maxi-drills and perform template making. Workers analyze specifications and decide on tooling according to metal properties and lathe operation.
Working Conditions
Work is done indoors where there is contact with grease, oils and solvents. Potential hazards include some exposure to chips and airborne dust and sharp tools. The work requires fine motor skills.
Wages
Beginning apprentices start at 65 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase, usually every six months, until reaching the journey-level rate.
Length of Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship lasts four to five years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 200 related classroom hours per year and a total of 8,320 on-the-job training hours.
Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent.
Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
This program is only open to employees of training agents registered with the local apprenticeship committee.
