Job Description
Refrigeration mechanics install and repair industrial and commercial refrigeration systems. They lay out reference points for installation of structural and functional components, drill holes and install mounting brackets and hangers into building floors and walls. They lift, align and install functional components such as motors, controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, cores and pipes. The mechanics pump specified gas or fluid into the system and make necessary adjustments.

 

Working Conditions
This work is usually done inside an industrial plant. Workers must be able to perform heavy lifting and may do a lot of bending and stretching. The mechanics use measuring instruments, drills, power equipment and hoists. They work with and around gas and fluids held under pressure.

 

Wages
Beginning apprentices start at about 50 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase, usually every six months, until reaching the journey-level rate.

 

Length of Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship lasts four years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 144 related classroom hours per year and 8,000 on-the-job training hours.

 

Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 18 years of age. In addition, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent.

 
Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
 
These programs are only open to employees of training agents registered with the local apprenticeship committee.
