Job Description
Municipal maintenance workers maintain and repair community property. Their duties include street maintenance, sanitation, sidewalk repair, pothole patching, curb and gutter repair, street and alley grading, sewer maintenance, landscaping and installing, as well as repair and maintenance of traffic control devises.

 

Working Conditions
The work is performed both outdoors and inside, in all kinds of weather. These workers use hand and power tools, but may also operate heavy equipment. They may occasionally use chemicals. Maintenance workers must be physically fit and be able to do work that requires heavy lifting, bending and stretching.

 

Wages
Beginning apprentices start at 73 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase, usually every six months, until the journey-level rate is achieved.

 

Length of Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship lasts between two and three years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 144 related classroom hours per year and 5,500 on-the-job training hours.

 

Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants in Springfield must meet that city´s civil service requirements.

 
This program is only open to employees of the training agents registered with the local apprenticeship committee.
