Job Description
This apprenticeship leads to the Limited Energy Class B Technician license. Limited Energy Class B Technicians install, maintain, replace and repair electrical systems and equipment of under 100 volt-amperes, including communications systems (data telecommunications, intercom and paging) and specialized control systems (HVAC, medical, boiler, clock and instrumentation).
Working Conditions
This work is performed indoors and outdoors and requires standing, bending and reaching in cold, wet conditions, in confined crawl spaces and at heights. Tools include electrical metering devices, cable pulling devices, electrical hand tools, soldering tools, hammers, drills and side cutters.
Wages
Beginning apprentices start at about 50 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase usually every six months, until the journey-level rate is achieved.
Length of Apprenticeship
This apprenticeship lasts about two years, with the opportunity to advance every six months. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 144 related classroom hours per year and 4,000 on-the-job training hours. Journey-level Limited Energy Technicians must have a state license. Upon completion of the program, apprentices are referred to the Oregon Building Codes Division for the appropriate licensing exam.
Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 17 years of age to apply, and 18 to begin the program. In addition, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent, and complete at least one year of high school algebra or post high school algebra course with a passing grade of ´C´. Apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
This program is only open to employees of training agents registered with the local apprenticeship committee.
