Job Description
Power line clearance tree trimmers trim trees from high-voltage power lines. Some of their tools include: chain saws, hand saws, pole pruners, ropes, rope blocks, rope climbing saddles, chippers and aerial lift equipment.
 
Working Conditions
The work is outdoors, year round, in all weather conditions. Tree trimmers work at heights of up to 100 feet, suspended from ropes, saddles and aerial lift equipment. They must be able to recognize the hazards involved with trimming trees around high-voltage power lines (from 120 volts to 500,000 volts) and be able to perform the required rescue procedures.
 
Wages
Beginning apprentices start at approximately 65 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase usually every six months, until the journey-level rate is achieved.
 
Length of Apprenticeship
This apprenticeship lasts two years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 144 related classroom hours per year and 4,000 on-the-job training hours.
 
Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 18 years of age. In addition, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent.
 
Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
