Job Description
Residential electricians work in all phases of the residential electrical construction and service industry. They do the electrical construction work on projects ranging from single-family residences to apartment complexes. Workers install wiring for power, lighting and specialized systems, such as telephone systems or sound and fire alarm, in all types of dwellings. They also perform repair and maintenance on existing dwellings.
 
Working Conditions
This work is done in the full range of environmental conditions: outside in the mud, dirt, cold, sun, rain and snow; inside in climate-controlled modern offices; and in state-of-the-art clean rooms in hospitals and manufacturing plant. The work may require considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting, climbing, pulling, and reaching and may be conducted in cramped spaces or on ladders and scaffolding at great heights. Hazards include electric shocks, burns and falling objects.
 
Wages
Beginning apprentices start at 50 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase usually every six months, until the journey-level rate is achieved.
 
Length of Apprenticeship
This apprenticeship lasts two years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 144 to 180 related classroom hours per year and 4,000 on-the-job training hours. Journey-level residential electricians are required to hold a state license. Upon completion of the program, apprentices are referred to the Oregon Building Codes Division for the appropriate licensing exam.
 
Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 17 years of age to apply, and 18 to begin the program. In addition, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent, and complete at least one year of high school algebra or post high school algebra course with a passing grade of ´C´. Apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
