Job Description
Includes helicopter and aircraft engine specialists. Airframe and Power-plant Mechanics diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul aircraft engines and assemblies, such as hydraulic and pneumatic systems. They read and interpret maintenance manuals, service bulletins, and other specifications to determine the feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.
They inspect completed work to certify that maintenance meets standards and that aircraft are ready for operation. Maintain repair logs, documenting all preventive and corrective aircraft maintenance. Conduct routine and special inspections as required by regulations. Examine and inspect aircraft components, including landing gear, hydraulic systems, and de-icers to locate cracks, breaks, leaks, or other problem. Inspect airframes for wear or other defects. Maintain, repair, and rebuild aircraft structures, functional components, and parts such as wings and fuselage, rigging, hydraulic units, oxygen systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, gaskets, and seals. Replace or repair worn, defective, or damaged components, using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment. Measure parts for wear, using precision instruments.
Working Conditions
Most work is typically carried out indoors in a plant facility. The work requires both upper body strength and fine motor skills. There is significant bending and squatting in some of the repair work.
Wages
Beginning apprentices start at approximately 60 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase, usually every six months until the journey-level rate is achieved.
Length of Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship requires approximately 3 years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 165 related classroom hours per year and 4,812 on-the-job training hours.
Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 16 years of age with a high school diploma or 18 years. In addition, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent. Applicants must be able to understand and read English.
Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
